Afghanistan has one of the world's lowest female literacy rates, with millions of adult women never having had the opportunity to learn to read or write. This programme offers structured literacy classes for women aged 18 and above in community centres across four provinces. Courses run for nine months and cover basic reading, writing, and numeracy. Women who complete the course are able to read simple texts, write their own name and basic letters, and perform everyday arithmetic. Many participants report that literacy has transformed their ability to manage household finances, support their children's education, and communicate with healthcare providers. The programme currently operates 25 classes with an enrolment of 500 women. Each class is led by a trained female instructor who is herself a local community member. Materials are adapted to be culturally appropriate and practically relevant to participants' daily lives.
